Patrick DeWitt – The Sisters Brothers

Written By: Edward - Dec• 31•11

Tale of the old west and two brothers Eli and Charlie Sisters, hired killers.  We follow them as they hunt down their target from Oregon to California.  This story won three very prestigious awards.  It’s  a good ride with a raft of quirky characters.  As a reader I enjoyed tagging along with them.  As a writer, I believe the judges missed some important details.  The brothers speak very formally and use big words for two uneducated cowboys.  They also sound very similar.  Either the author hasn’t watched many westerns or is trying to rewrite the genre.  One cowboy brushes his teeth and tries to diet.  In a world where food was precious and occasionally hard to come by, this didn’t sit well with me.  Also, when a character makes note of a surveillance subject, his sounds read like a story.  In my firefighting career, an officer, my little notebook was not a manuscript.  My notes were short and precise.

I suppose I’m being picky but I try to make my own writing plausible in every way and I still can’t win any awards for my eBooks.  Like I said I did enjoy the ride.
