Okay, this is what I get for picking up a book by two authors. I had some serious problems with this book namely some important details. First one of the main characters, Jake, “…spent more time at sea than on land.” Got that? A great sailor, you think. Nope, this guy doesn’t bother to look at weather reports and gets the boat and the woman and kids caught in a huge storm, Such bullshit. If you sail anywhere, especially the salt, you look at the weather reports you don’t just wake up one morning and tell everyone to put on life jackets. Also, the woman sees Jake jump in to repair the boat and he’s down underwater, she says, “How long can he hold his breath with just a snorkel?” Excuse me, lady? Mostly, at the beginning you barely know they’re all aboard a sailboat–no wave action, hoisting sails, the water, etc. This all makes me believe the two authors have never set foot in the salt. My writers group would crucify me over this stuff. here’s more: Jake the stupid sailor dies in a life raft beside the woman and 3 kids. That’s it for him in the story. What about his body? Dumped at sea or was he buried when you all got to shore? We’ll never know. All this leads me to believe the story is terribly formulaic and probably written with ‘writer software’ you know, click-time for suspense, click, time for a heart-rendering moment. The characters are all stereotypical. It felt like I was forced to like or dislike characters. Because of all this I tore through it because there’s no meat on the bones. I know I write better than this. The story though, does have some suspense–some. Strangely, this book got rave reviews. Sail is the same but there’s barely any sailing. I think the reviewers got paid for their reviews. Luckily, I picked this book out of a reduced bin where it should have went from the get go.
