This is much like Mystic River. Pelecanos is a very good writer. His stories are set in Washington D.C. and are heavy into characterization. Some good likeable characters in this one too, as it centers around a group of people who lost friends and relatives in a pizza joint robbery and how they’re dealing with it. Let’s not for get the well-drawn criminals here who think nothing of the murders and carry on with their lives. But through circumstances they return to D.C. for another job as they have connections there. They also want to settle an old score, unfinished business from the robbery/homicide. The main character is a PI/bartender who slowly solves the original crime, mostly by accident, with one thing leading to another. He gets in the action here and there throughout due to his PI job; keeps things interesting. Most of the men hang around bars while their women try to keep them out. Word gets out the killers are back for some revenge and the entire story heads toward the climax. I like the dialogue, the hard guys, and nobody really moralizing much on their actions. Liked Hard Revolution more. I enjoy the author’s crisp, tough dialogue. It’s my weak spot as a reader and am told, strength as a writer. Yatscoffbooks.com
